Chapter 9

“What the hell is going on here? Yesterday you were engaged to Emma and today you’ve got a half-naked woman in your house.”

Lucas had ushered Stephen and Terrence into the great room and offered them a seat on the floor where they could talk. While Terrence had been sleeping sporadically due to the hurricane and looked like he didn’t believe what was going on, Stephen looked disappointed. Though he hadn’t really liked Emma’s snobby attitude and had always cautioned Lucas about a woman who would never visit Florida, Stephen had always spoken well of Lucas’s commitment to the relationship.

“I can’t believe you’re stepping out on Emma.”

“I’m not, Stephen. You know that’s not me.”

“You’re crazy, right? How do you have another woman?” Terrence demanded. “You don’t even have chairs. Who is she?”

“Doreen Gamble. She’s Emma’s assistant. That’s not true. She was Emma’s assistant.”

Terrence burst out laughing and Stephen looked like he’d been kicked in the head by a mule. “Dude, T is right, and you know I never agree with him. You couldn’t have Emma, so you’re banging her assistant? That’s nasty.”

“I’m not banging her, and I broke up with Emma before I started anything with Doreen. But I’ve known Doreen for the past eight months. We talk every day.”

“How’d you get to be with Doreen?”

“We got to know one another while renovating the house. Emma was never into the whole decorating thing and delegated the task to Doreen, who has a natural talent for it. All of this is her. She doesn’t know that I know, but I do. From the wainscoting to the sconces in the bathrooms. We only got to meet face-to-face this weekend. She’s a good woman. Smart, funny, beautiful, and I like her.”

“This wouldn’t be you getting back at Emma for never coming down here to see you? That’s a dangerous game, and it’s one people play consciously and unconsciously. Both of you could be trying to get back at Emma for the same reason,” Terrence reasoned. “Because that’s exactly what I think it is. I couldn’t make this up on the radio.”

“I’d better not ever hear this or there won’t be a hole deep enough for me to bury you.”

“Boy, my woman will have you strung up on an electrical line for messing with me. I got it like that.” Terrence walked around the great room with his chest out like he was a superhero.

“Man, go get your balls out of Sherri’s purse and come sit down,” Stephen told Terrence, and the three laughed.

Terrence walked into the kitchen and over to the stove. “Say what you want. Sherri and I are different people after spending so much time at the station. My baby takes care of me, and I take care of her. I’m not ashamed to admit it.”

“Could you play ‘Let’s Get It On’ any more? What the hell were you two doing?”

“Taking care of grown folks’ business. That’s our theme song and it seems to be working. People aren’t fighting and they’re making love.
